Suicide Squad : Movie Review

It’s not easy to put together a movie like Suicide Squad. After an astounding performance by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, many could not accept Jared Leto as the new joker. So as we all know, the movie depicts the villains as the good guys; you don’t get to see this type of comic book representation coming to life that often. Most of the fans were excited to see their childhood memories coming to life, as this type of movie was not made before. Though the critics came up with negative comments about the movie, it did not stop fans from watching it as soon as they could.

Viola Davis, renowned for her major role in TV show ‘How to get away with murder’ played a classy, nefarious government agent who put together all maestro criminals together for a mission. Rick Flag played by Joel Kinnaman, takes responsibility to monitor the deadliest team of superheroes. It includes Will Smith’s Deadshot an alarmingly dangerous assassin, Jay Hernandez’s pyro-powered Diablo, Margot Robbie’s unhinged Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s unicorn obsessed Captain Boomerang, Karen Fukahara’s sword expert Katana, and last but not the least, Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje’s muscular Killer Croc.

Compared to other characters, Harley Quinn was the most portentous of all. Margot Robbie did a wonderful job portraying one of the most vital villains in DC’s Batman Universe. She had a spellbinding backstory with her boyfriend, the Joker that made her acting even more badass. Also another major character, Deadshot played an emotionally appealing role for a villain. Diablo stole the show at many points. The other ones Katana, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, and their temporary team mate Slipknot carried out a really good job too.

Enchantress, played by Cara Delavigne was the villain of villains at some point. She has this superpower that a really old witch shares her soul along with the host body. Her bitterly villainous magic tricks make her powerful than any other character here. David Ayer, the director known for his work in End of Watch, The Fast and the Furious, etc. managed to win many comic book lover’s heart.

What was disappointing was that Jared Leto’s Joker was barely in the movie. I agree that his character did not have a major role associated with the main plot, but he did deserve more scenes compared to how hard he worked to bring undoubtedly the best DC villain to life. He practiced really hard to carry out the Joker laugh, he gifted Margot Robbie a real life mouse to improve their relationship as on-screen dating partners. Jared Leto was really hurt as soon as he saw the movie which was horribly edited by the Warner Brothers.

For Rotten Tomatoes, I would say that they do not hold a grudge against DC since the Warner Brothers acquired the critics firm in 2011. However, they do have a pathetic habit of rating a lot of good movies badly, e.g. Now you see me 2, X-men Apocalypse, The Butterfly Effect, Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice, etc., whereas they rated some of the horrendously performed movies such as the Twilight, Breaking Dawn Part two, Eclipse, and Justin Bieber’s frustrating documentary film Never Say Never way more than they deserve to be rated.

Before you watch the movie, let me tell you that you should practice of not following the reviews of Rotten Tomatoes often, due to my reasons I mentioned above. If you are a comic book fan, or even animated movies fan of DC, you will love suicide squad. Though the Joker was not that much visible in the film, let me tell you that Jared Leto did a mind blowing performance playing The Joker. It’s not David Ayer’s fault for not being able to portray the Joker on screen that much, but Warner Brother’s. They did not allow David Ayer to launch the extended scenes together.

A lot of fans are suing Warner Brothers for false advertisement. (SPOILER ALERT) The scenes showed in trailer such as the Joker saying – “I can’t wait to show you my toys”, and Harley Quinn saying “We are the bad guys. It’s what we do”, were not in the film at all. Not only were these, a lot of major scenes cut by the Warner Brothers.

However, I hope DC does a better job cooperating with their parent company, The Warner Brothers for their upcoming films which we can’t wait for – Justice League, Wonder Woman, etc. Suicide Squad was not a disappointment that critics claim to be. You will love it. DC did a good job adding humor to its dark theme. I rate this movie a 7.5 out of 10.
